USING PROQUEST FROM THE SPSCC LIBRARY MAIN WEB PAGE:
LOCATE THE SPSCC LIBRARY HOME PAGE :
Print off these directions and then click on the icon to your right labeled "SPSCC library web page". As you read this document (after clicking on the icon from the previous page) you are currently at the SPSCC Library’s main Web page located at www.library.spscc.ctc.edu:8080. From this page click on the icon on the top left of the page that is labeled "Journal Articles".
PASSWORDS:
On the "Journal Articles" page you will see a variety of options including Ebsco and ProQuest. You will need passwords to use Ebsco and ProQuest. You must be a student to acquire passwords. Contact the Library at 360 754 7711 ext. 271 if you need a password or stop by the Library on campus in Building 28. Passwords change every quarter so you will need to get a new one with each new quarter.
USING PROQUEST:
The ProQuest database contains an online collection of magazine, newspaper and journal articles. This database contains our largest collection of newspapers, national and local. Search here for a local issue. ProQuest also contains a large number of general news, magazine and specialty journals. The database is searchable by keyword, subject, or subscription title.
1.If you haven’t already done so, from the main SPSCC Library web page (see web address above) click on the words on the top left of the page that say "Journal Articles".
2. You are now on the "Periodical Resources" web page for the Library. At this page click on the letters in the center of the page that say "ProQuest".
3. Next, click on the square, black box at the top right of the screen that is labeled "Connect to ProQuest Click Here".
4. At this point you will need to put in a log on I.D. and a password and then press the "Enter" key. (See directions above if you don’t have the log on id and password.) If you are using a computer located on campus you probably won’t have to enter the log on I.D. and password and your computer will skip this screen and go to the next screen below. If you must, enter your logon i.d. and password and click on "Connect".After entering the password click on "Connect".
5. The next screen lists the databases available on ProQuest. The entire database is pre-selected for you so go ahead and click on "Continue" at the top of your screen.
c. A search screen for the database will appear. Think about your topic and enter keywords or a phrase related to that topic into the white search box in the center of the screen click on the blue box marked "Search". Here are a few hints for entering your search words.
Connect your search words by using "and", "or", or "not" between each word.
Example: Internet and ethics
If you want to find two words appearing adjacent to each other place quotations around the group of words.
Example: "affirmative action" and business
After entering your search words click on the "Search" button.
At this point a list of articles resulting from your search will appear on the screen. To read the full text of the article (if available, see notations on the bottom of your screen) double click on the title of the article with your mouse. Roll the screen down to the full text of the article.
Once you have the article on the screen you have the following choices:
-Browse and read the article online.
-Use the Netscape or Internet Explorer "Print" command at the top of your screen to print the entire article.
-Use the e-mail option at the left of your screen to e-mail the article home to yourself.
-Download the article onto a disc or to the hard drive on your personal PC.
After you have made one of these choices you can press the button labeled "Results List" at the top or bottom of your screen to return to your list of articles and continue searching.
If you have any questions, please ask the librarian on duty at the "Ask Here" desk for assistance. If you are not in the Library you may contact us via telephone at 360 754 7711 ext. 271.
