Electronic Books

What books are free online?

You will not find most textbooks online. You will find many classic works of fiction, non-fiction and poetry, plus important cultural and historical texts.

The year to remember is 1923. Books copyrighted prior to January 1, 1923, were protected for 75 years. As copyrights expired those books became part of the public domain and can now be legally posted online. Copyright laws have changed, and books written after 1923 won’t begin to enter the public domain until 2019.

Where can I find books online?

The Online Books Page The Online Books Page is the best place to start your search for free online books. Sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania, this site allows you to search by title or author and returns results from a variety of web sites.

Google Book Search The Google Book Search: Google is working with several large libraries to put their collections online. Users can find information about books by topic, or locate a search term in a few lines of text. The full text of books no longer protected by copyright is available.
