Contact the Library at 360 754 7711 ext. 271 if you need a password or stop by the Library. Passwords change every quarter so you will need to get a new one with each new quarter.

4.USING EBSCO:

The Ebsco database contains a large collection of magazine, newspaper and journal articles. The database is searchable by keyword, subject, or subscription title.

  1. To enter the database you’ll need to click through a series of screens. Here’s how to do it:

1.From the main SPSCC Library web page (you should currently be on this page) click on the button on the top left of the page that says "Journal Articles".

2. At this page click on the box in the center of the page that says "Ebsco".

3. Click on the thin box at the top left of the screen that is labeled "Login to Ebsco".

4. At this point if you are off campus you will need to put in a log on I.D., a password and press the "Enter" key. See directions above if you don’t have the log on id and password. If you are using a computer located on campus you won’t have to enter the log on I.D. and password and your computer will skip this screen and go to the next screen below.

5.Click in the center of this screen on the words that read " EbscoHost Web".

b. At this point you will need to select a database from the three listed on your screen.

Academic Search Elite- Academic Search Elite contains over 1200 subscriptions to newspapers, magazines and professional journals covering all disciplines within the humanities, social sciences and sciences. All articles in the database are fully searchable and contain the full text of each article.

Business Source Elite-Business Source Elite contains over 900 subscriptions to technical, professional and trade journals and magazines covering business, technology, computing and many other technical fields. All articles in the database are fully searchable and contain the full text of each article.

ERIC- ERIC is an index of professional educational journals with few full text articles available on the database. In general, you probably won’t find this database useful for most purposes because the text of the articles is not available on the database.

Think about your topic in relation to these databases and select the database that seems to be most appropriate and click on "Enter".

c. A search screen for the database will appear. Enter keywords for your topic into the box labeled "Find" (you will see a blinking cursor in this box) and press "Enter". Here are a few hints for entering your search words.

Connect your search words by using "and", "or", or "not" between each word.

Example: Internet and ethics

If you want to find two words appearing adjacent to each other place quotations around the group of words.

Example: "affirmative action" and business

After entering your search words click on the "Search" button.

At this point a list of articles resulting from your search will appear on the screen. To read the full text of the article double click on the title of the article with your mouse. Roll the screen down to the full text of the article (labeled) "Best Part".

Once you have the article on the screen you have three choices by using the button labeled " Print/E-mail/Save". If you don’t see this button roll the article all the way to the top or the bottom of the screen and you should see it.

After you have made one of these choices or read the article online you can press the button labeled "Results List" to return to your list of articles and continue searching.
