USING EBSCO FROM THE SPSCC LIBRARY MAIN WEB PAGE:

FIRST: Print off these directions and then go back to the SPSCC Library main website at www.library.spscc.ctc.edu

As you read this document (that you've just printed), you are currently at the SPSCC Library’s main Web page at www.library.spscc.ctc.edu. From this page click on the link on the top left of the page that is labeled "Periodical Articles".

On this page you will see options for Ebsco and ProQuest. You will need passwords to use Ebsco and ProQuest. You must be a student to acquire passwords. Contact the Library at 360-596-5271, email us at library@spscc.ctc.edu if you need a password or stop by the Library for a password sheet. Passwords change every quarter so you will need to get a new one with each new quarter.

USING EBSCO:

The Ebsco database contains a large collection of magazine, newspaper and journal articles. The database is searchable by keyword, subject, or subscription title.

To enter the database you’ll need to click through a series of screens. Here’s how:

1. From the main SPSCC Library web page (you should currently be on this page) click on the link at the top left of the page that says "Periodical Articles".

2. At this page click on the box at the left of the screen that says "Ebsco".

3. If you are using a computer located on campus you won’t have to enter a user name and password. Your computer will skip the logon and go to the next screen. However, if you are off campus, you will need to enter a user name 'SPSCC', a password and press the "Enter" key. You must be a student to acquire a password. Contact the Library at 360-596-5271 or library@spscc.ctc.edu or pick up a password sheet in person.

At this point you will need to choose a database to search from. You may choose multiple databases by clicking the little box to the left of each one.

Academic Search Elite- Academic Search Elite contains over 1200 subscriptions to newspapers, magazines and professional journals covering all disciplines within the humanities, social sciences and sciences. All articles in the database are fully searchable and contain the full text of each article.

Business Source Elite-Business Source Elite contains over 900 subscriptions to technical, professional and trade journals and magazines covering business, technology, computing and many other technical fields. All articles in the database are fully searchable and contain the full text of each article.

Think about your topic in relation to these databases and select the database that seems to be most appropriate and click on "Enter". Note: you can search both databases at the same time.

A search screen for the database will appear. Enter keywords for your topic into the box labeled "Find" (where your cursor will be blinking) and press "Enter".

Here are a few hints for entering your search words.

Connect your search words by using "and", "or", or "not" between each word.

Example: Internet and ethics

If you want to find two words appearing adjacent to each other place quotations around the group of words.

Example: "affirmative action" and business

After entering your search words click on the "Search" button.

At this point a list of articles resulting from your search will appear on the screen. To read the full text of the article double click on the title of the article with your mouse. Roll the screen down to the full text of the article (labeled) "Best Part".

Once you have the article on the screen you have three choices by using the button labeled " Print/E-mail/Save". If you don’t see this button roll the article all the way to the top or the bottom of the screen and you should see it.

After you have made one of these choices or read the article online you can press the button labeled "Results List" to return to your list of articles and continue searching.
