A, An, The

Articles are adjectives because they limit, qualify, or make more specific the meaning of another word.

         I took the dog for a walk. (refers to a specific dog)

         A dog makes a great pet. (refers to one of many dogs)

The indicates whether a noun refers to something specific.

A, An refers to a noun that is one among many or hasn't yet been specified.

GENERAL COUNT NOUNS

A general count noun is a person, place, or thing that is one among many (in the singular case),
or a group of people, places, or things (in the plural case) that hasn't been specified.

          Good students aren't defensive.              plural
          The computer was a great invention.      singular

Use the with the superlative adjectives (such as best, most, greatest, greenest, heaviest, etc.)

          I saw the worst movie ever last night.
          New York has the best baseball team in the world.

NON­C0UNT NOUNS

Non­count nouns are things and ideas that are not counted or are not countable.
Use no article before a non­count noun when reference is general.

          We rarely hear thunder in the northwest.
          Electrtcity's cost can't be measured with money; it must be measured by the cost
          to our natural environnnent.
          Money can't buy you love.

Things and ideas that are usually non­count nouns can be made into count nouns when they
are specified.

          Where' s the money I lent you?
          The loyalty
of Neil Young's dog is legendary.
